This is the Kings House in Peninsula Barracks, Winchester .... originally a castle was built on this site by William the Conqueror, then destroyed by Oliver Cromwell, then another castle was built here by King Charles II. This elegant winged building is now occupied by private apartments, and alongside are the Gurkhas, King's Royal Hussars, Light Infantry and Royal Green Jackets Museums

  1. I only photographed two small sections of the buildings .... King Charles II wanted a palace to rival Versailles near Paris, but unfortunately ran out of money before all of the buildings and gardens could be completed. I didn't realise until yesterday that the area was open to the public, since it was still in use as Army barracks the last time I was there (in 1983 !!), so I will probably return to take more photographs (and add them here) when the weather is drier !!
